The Maple Village Waldorf School (MVWS) is located in a quaint residential neighborhood in Long Beach, California. MVWS aims to create a compassionate and welcoming environment rooted in the traditions and the philosophy of Waldorf education. They endeavor to engage and nurture the whole child resulting in a balance of heart, mind, body and spirit.
MVWS strives to provide a full living education integrating academia, the arts and communal awareness in order to inspire, energize and develop creativity and a love of learning in each student. They place a high importance on contributing to and providing a positive focal point for the local community.
MVWS also provides an environment that helps usher into the world well rounded individuals – learned, inwardly confident, responsible, and self-motivated – with reverence for others and their environment.
A world in need of healing calls for people who can think for themselves, work with others, solve problems creatively, and care deeply about those around them. Again and again, that is who Waldorf students become. For 19 years, MVWS has brought Waldorf’s whole-child approach – head, heart, and hands – to Long Beach.
At MVWS, the curriculum follows how children grow. Students learn through play, story, art, and movement, so what they learn stays with them. A parent who teaches college courses to high school students says MVWS 8th graders can hold their own against high school seniors in writing and communication.
Students also learn to care for one another. Every 8th grader is paired with a 1st-grade buddy, and students of all ages work together on mixed teams where the goal is to get everyone across, not to win.
MVWS is a private school, but it is not a wealthy one. Its families include teachers, small business owners, and working parents, and many make real sacrifices to pay tuition. They trust MVWS to give their children a strong academic education and something more: social responsibility, artistic ability, and a sense of wonder about the world.
MVWS asked their families why they love the school. Watch the short videos below to see what they had to say!
