Founded in 2008, Maple Village Waldorf School (MVWS) is an independent Waldorf school located in Long Beach, California, serving children in their parent/child classes through 8th grade. Rooted in Waldorf’s whole-child approach, MVWS integrates academics, the arts, and hands-on learning to nurture each student’s heart, mind, and body. In 2023, MVWS used a LENDonate loan to purchase and renovate the campus it had rented for 14 years. This loan will refinance that existing loan, with repayment expected to come from student tuition and capital fundraising campaigns.

Who They Are: Maple Village Waldorf School

The Maple Village Waldorf School (MVWS) is located in a quaint residential neighborhood in Long Beach, California. MVWS aims to create a compassionate and welcoming environment rooted in the traditions and the philosophy of Waldorf education. They endeavor to engage and nurture the whole child resulting in a balance of heart, mind, body and spirit.

MVWS strives to provide a full living education integrating academia, the arts and communal awareness in order to inspire, energize and develop creativity and a love of learning in each student. They place a high importance on contributing to and providing a positive focal point for the local community.

MVWS also provides an environment that helps usher into the world well rounded individuals – learned, inwardly confident, responsible, and self-motivated – with reverence for others and their environment.

Music is an essential part of the curriculum and permeates the school day in every class. Music not only enlivens the spirit but also increases a child’s capacity for learning. Through the study of music, they learn to sensitize their hearing, allowing them the ability to really hear the sounds of the world and each other.

Why Support this Program

A world in need of healing calls for people who can think for themselves, work with others, solve problems creatively, and care deeply about those around them. Again and again, that is who Waldorf students become. For 19 years, MVWS has brought Waldorf’s whole-child approach – head, heart, and hands – to Long Beach.

At MVWS, the curriculum follows how children grow. Students learn through play, story, art, and movement, so what they learn stays with them. A parent who teaches college courses to high school students says MVWS 8th graders can hold their own against high school seniors in writing and communication.

Students also learn to care for one another. Every 8th grader is paired with a 1st-grade buddy, and students of all ages work together on mixed teams where the goal is to get everyone across, not to win.

MVWS is a private school, but it is not a wealthy one. Its families include teachers, small business owners, and working parents, and many make real sacrifices to pay tuition. They trust MVWS to give their children a strong academic education and something more: social responsibility, artistic ability, and a sense of wonder about the world.

The young people who leave MVWS are capable, compassionate, and ready to take part fully in the world. That is the difference MVWS makes.

The 4th grade classroom was abuzz when special guest beekeepers gave a presentation on honey bees. Students had tasted a variety of honey at the end of the presentation and had some wonderful observations about the taste, color, and texture.

Waldorf pedagogy leads students to engage with the curriculum on many levels. Lessons balance cognitive and emotional intelligence with physical activity where each assignment integrates academic work with fine and practical arts.

Women Founded. Women Led.

Lisa J. McCarthy has been a Waldorf educator since the mid-1990s, after a visit to a Waldorf campus inspired her to set aside plans to become a college professor. She founded Maple Cottage Retreat, a Waldorf-inspired parent/toddler class she taught out of her home, and in 2008 co-founded Maple Village Waldorf School with a group of parents and teachers.
Today, Lisa serves as Director of School Life, teaches middle school Language Arts, and leads parent education classes for MVWS families and the wider community. She has been instrumental in several Long Beach schools, including MVWS, receiving the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon award.
