Why Support this Program

MVCFS is a nonprofit human services agency that has been providing services to some of California’s most challenging and “at risk” children and adolescents for over 50 years. We are currently serving over 150 foster youth in the Bay Area that are at risk of homelessness, sexual exploitation, suicide, gang involvement, and institutionalization.

Mountain Valley Academy is one of the few residential programs within the state of California that provides this intensive level of treatment specifically for special education students. Changes in regulation and limited funding has forced the majority of programs like Mountain Valley to shut down or dramatically reduce their residential capacity. Unfortunately, the vast majority of California students with the most critical special education needs are sent to institutions outside the state of California due to a serious shortage of programs in the state.

Mountain Valley Child and Family Services - Boy with treehouse

Mountain Valley has suffered since the pandemic due to staffing shortages and subsequent reductions in capacity that have had a detrimental effect on their finances while also limiting the number of students they can serve. However, in the past few months they have seen a turnaround in hiring and have recently been able to begin to reopen some residential capacity and increase the number of students they can serve. With the help of this bridge loan, they can keep the doors open, cover their expenses and continue to be a vital resource to some of the most challenging and “at risk” youth in California.
