Who Can Participate

Who They Are: Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC)

In 2009, Sharon Content founded Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) after growing increasingly concerned about the lack of support offered to young people who experience parental incarceration.

CPNYC is the first and only after school program and summer day camp in NYC specifically designed to meet the needs, interests, and concerns of children left behind by a parent serving time in prison. Since its inception, CPNYC has provided services to over 1,500 children and their families. The agency has developed broad collaborative relationships and community partnerships, raised over $5M dollars in government and philanthropic funding, and established its own innovative and holistic model to support children of incarcerated parents in leading healthy and productive lives.

Use of Proceeds & Repayment

The loan proceeds will be used for working capital. Government funding will not commence until January 2023 so this bridge loan is needed to continue operating.

It is anticipated that the loan will be repaid in early February 2023 using the funds from the grants received in January.

Why Support this Program

Children of Promise, NYC is a community-centered organization that provides support to children facing uncertainty and trauma from changing living arrangements or being separated from their siblings. CPNYC creates a therapeutic community with an after-school program for children and youth impacted by mass incarceration. CPNYC co-locates a Wellness Center with licensed mental health clinicians that promote therapeutic empowerment and partners with the community to dismantle the stigma and heal from the trauma of mass incarceration.

CPNYC helps to break the cycle of intergenerational involvement in the criminal justice system by serving each child’s needs as comprehensively as possible. The cycle can only be broken if social, economic, and educational inequities are addressed.
